Sunderland maintained their unbeaten run at the Stadium of Light in 24/25 as Tom Watson's deflected strike proved to be the difference on Wearside.
The Potters had taken an early lead through Lewis Koumas in a game played in the driving rain and swirling wind of Storm Darragh throughout, however, Watson's second, four minutes from time, decided the contest.
Narcís Pèlach's side had chances to score a second in either half with Michael Rose, Tom Cannon and Ashley Phillips all going close, however, it was the hosts who sealed the points to maintain their place in the Championship's top four.
