England’s Golden Generation was full of talent, but never quite achieved what they should have. With Ballon d’Or-nominated stars like Lampard, Gerrard, and Beckham - as well as Michael Owen, who won the award - they had a squad to match those of France and Brazil, but were hampered by off-field issues and debate over the role of Scholes, the lack of a left-winger, and conservative tactics.
While John Terry and Rio Ferdinand managed to bench Sol Campbell and Ledley King, both had issues in their personal lives, and other players, like Beckham and Rooney, were regular targets of vicious media criticism. And while Chelsea, Man United, and Liverpool saw the best of their stars, few of them produced on the international stage.
