In 2020 Ed was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease and end stage renal disease, finding out he was in kidney failure. As he immediately began dialysis and treatment at Penn Medicine, they let him know he needed to get on the kidney donation list. As a Sons of Ben Member, the Union's official supporters' group, Ed tried to expand his luck in finding a match by posting his need for a donor on the Sons of Ben social media pages.
In 2023, Union season ticket member Kate saw his post. She proceeded to get tested and found out she was a match. The pair underwent successful surgeries at Penn Medicine, with Ed unknowingly receiving a kidney from a fellow Union STM. Following the surgery, Kate wrote Ed a letter explaining who she was. From there the Union and Penn Medicine set out to surprise Ed by bringing Kate out to a private Union training session.
