Anne "Nancy" Kenney attended the Women’s College of Rutgers University, joining the Navy reserves and W.A.V.E.S. in 1953, her junior year, with no requirement to serve on active duty. Graduating from college in 1954 with a degree in Zoology, she made the decision to go active duty in the Navy. Two weeks after graduation, she went to Officer Candidate School (OCS) in Newport, Rhode Island as a part of the 2nd class ever to allow women in the program. After commissioning as an officer, her first job came as the Communications Officer (COMMO) at the Naval Ammunition Depot in Hingham, Mass. She replaced LT John Kenney, whom she would marry two years later. As the COMMO for the ammunition depot, Nancy was responsible for managing all message traffic for the base and maintaining communications-related publications. After one year in this billet, Nancy received orders to serve as the COMMO on staff for Vice Admiral john Hoskins at Quonset Point Naval Air Station (NAS) in Kingston, RI. She would become the second only WAVE officer to serve on the Admirals staff after WWII and was the only female on VADM Hoskins’ staff. She would hold this position for one year before discharging from the Navy as Lieutenant junior Grade (Ltjg). She worked in a library full time until she started a family, eventually having 2 sons, Chris and Mark: and a daughter, Susan. Mark and Susan both served in the Navy, as did her grandson, Colin, who is an Ensign assigned to a nuclear attack submarine.

"“It’s an honor to represent a city so rich with history, diversity and culture. Atlanta is the cradle of the Civil Rights Movement, a place that has produced great leaders like Martin Luther King Jr., Andrew Young and John Lewis. We are proud to wear the name ‘Atlanta United’ on our shirt and to be a part of this thriving city. Although we’ve only been here a short time, our commitment to inclusivity and rejecting hate of any kind is a fundamental part of who we are as a club.”
