On today’s EFD Explained, we explore Diego Simeone’s struggling Atletico Madrid side. Having spent more than any Spanish club bar Barcelona over the last five years, are his new tactics failing at the Wanda Metropolitano? Where do his main problems lie? And can he turn it around following a nightmare run of losses in December?
Diego Simeone recently marked a decade in the Atletico Madrid job. When he took over Los Colchoneros in December 2011, the club sat 10th in the league following five losses in eight games, and had won just one piece of silverware in the previous 15 seasons. They lost just five more games in the rest of the campaign with the Argentinian coach in charge, finishing fifth, their highest placing in three years, also winning the Europa League.
The following season he guided them to the Copa del Rey, beating Real Madrid at the Bernabeu in the final and ending a 26-game winless streak against their arch rivals in the process, before going one better in 2013-14, winning La Liga against the odds and reaching the Champions League final, beating Barcelona and Chelsea en route to the showpiece and coming seconds away from embarrassing Real for the second season running.
Another title followed in 2021, but since signing a new three-year contract, Simeone’s side has lost its magic, and now look in danger of missing out on Champions League qualification for the first time in a decade.
