Atlanta United hosted Eastern Conference opponent Inter Miami CF at Mercedes-Benz Stadium for their third matchup of the year. Unlike the first two meetings, and despite conceding first, Atlanta was the side to collect the three points with a 5-2 victory. Giorgos Giakoumakis is now tied for the lead in the Golden Boot race after scoring his 13th goal of the season, and Thiago Almada broke the single-season club record with his 15th assist.
Miami was unbeaten in all competitions in its last 12 matches prior to Saturday's match, ever since World Cup winner Lionel Messi joined the club in July. Messi did not play in the match or travel with the team to Atlanta due to fatigue.
Atlanta United joined Major League Soccer in 2017 and won the 2018 MLS Cup in just its second season, the earliest an expansion team has won the title since 1998.
