Hello and welcome back to UCL Review where today Dougie and McCubs are breaking down the key talking points of Chelsea’s 1-1 draw away at Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League semi final.
Hear how Christian Pulisic, Mason Mount and Timo Werner tore Real Madrid apart in the early stages with the American grabbing the crucial away goal, before Los Blancos, spearheaded by the ageless Karim Benzema grabbed a goal back.
The 2nd half largely petered out, but we did have time to see a cameo from former Blues hero Eden Hazard who has had a torrid time in Spain thus far. The key question we are asking though is did Zinedine Zidane get his tactics wrong? Choosing to go with a 5 at the back with Nacho, Varane and Militao in defence and Marcelo given a roaming roll, Chelsea led by the irrepressible Ngolo Kante dominated midfield, and broke on Real with ease.
How much credit should we give Thomas Tuchel, who has now faced the majority of Europe’s best managers whilst in charge of Chelsea, including Guardiola, Klopp, Bielsa, Simeone and Zidane and remained unbeaten against all of them!
Can Chelsea go all the way to the final? Or will Zidane’s experienced side mount a comeback at Stamford Bridge?
