Much was expected of Premier League Champions Liverpool’s meeting against Dutch Champions Ajax but it failed to live up to its billing. Sadio Mane forced a first-half own goal, Adrian made some smart saves and the Reds’ European campaign in the absence of Virgil Van Dijk got off to the perfect start.
But for Zinedine Zidane things weren’t nearly so straightforward. Real Madrid conceded three first-half goals in a Champions League match for the first time since 2005 and their forwards Rodrygo and Jovic were particularly poor.
