On today’s FD Explained, we’re looking at the 4-4-2 formation and whether there’s any place for it in elite football anymore. In contrast to 20 years ago, almost nobody plays this system these days, and even teams which has experienced success with it in the last decade, like Manchester United, Atletico Madrid, and Leicester have moved away from it. So what is it about 4-4-2 which doesn’t suit the modern game? Is anyone decent still using it? And what can we learn about bigger changes in the football landscape by examining how coaches like Klopp and Pep Guardiola have experimented with the formation?
