The signing of Philippe Coutinho on loan is undeniably a sign of Aston Villa’s resurgence in English football. Still in the Championship just three years ago and having not finished in the top half of the Premier League for over a decade, the Villains’ capture of the of the Brazilian playmaker, no doubt helped by the pulling power of manager of former Liverpool teammate Steven Gerrard, is the kind of move no one could have envisaged, and is yet another indication of the financial power of the Premier League.
But while his return to England is no doubt exciting for fans of Villa, it also shows just how far the player has fallen since his €145million move to Barcelona in 2018. Still the third-most expensive player of all time after Neymar and Kylian Mbappé, Coutinho was once seen as someone to take up the mantle when Lionel Messi’s star eventually faded at the Camp Nou. But amid the Blaugrana’s ongoing financial crisis, Coutinho has been considered a necessary sacrifice, leaving Barça just six months after Messi in order to free up space on the wage bill. On today’s episode of EFD Explained, we’re going to explore how Coutinho became a superstar, and the reasons behind his fall from grace.
