Following the 1998 World Cup, there were plenty of reasons to be cheerful for England fans. A new 'golden generation' of talent was coming through, and manager Glenn Hoddle seemed well-equipped to get the best out of them.

Yet, within six months of that tournament, Hoddle had been sacked, for reasons that were entirely unrelated to football.
