In April 2021, the European Super League was announced, sparking outrage among players, coaches and pundits and protests from fans, falling flat on its face within 72 hours after nine of its twelve founding clubs withdrew from the project. But just seven months later, at the general assembly of the Confederation of African Football, also known as CAF, all 54 member associations voted to give the organisation’s executive committee permission to move forward with plans for a very similar competition.
But who is behind it? How would it work? And could it actually be a good idea? Or is it doomed to fail like its European cousin?
