In 2010, Málaga CF were taken over by the Qatari royal Sheikh Abdullah, promising to disrupt the dominance of Barcelona and Real Madrid in La Liga.
Within two years, Malaga rose to fourth in the La Liga table and reached the quarter finals of the Champions League - but in 2018, they were relegated, and the club now find themselves in the bottom half of the Segunda Division table.
