On today’s FD Explained, we take a look at the reasons why Barcelona have been unable to register new signings this summer, what the new Messi contract means and how deep their problems lie.
Over the last 15 years, the eyes of the world have been on Barcelona perhaps more so than any other football club, and in the last two years, onlookers have become increasingly concerned, with huge debts and a seemingly unmanageable wage bill threatening the club’s financial future.
In light of this, it was recently revealed that La Liga have blocked Barça from registering new signings this summer until they can reduce their budget by €200million, meaning they will likely have to shift a number of high profile names in the transfer market – no mean feat with a squad on big contracts and with limited suitors.
