Saudi Pro League clubs, backed by the Saudi state, have spent over $1 billion on new signings over the last twelve months, while making Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, and Neymar Jr. the world's three highest paid footballers.
And yet, in a country of over 35 million people, half of whom are under the age of 25, there have been crowds at games as low as 133 fans, the league's average attendance is just 8,505, and stadiums are less than 30% full.
In this video, HITC Sevens takes a look at attendance statistics in Saudi Arabia this season, why they and TV audience figures are so low, and what can or could have been done to address them.
