On this week’s ten we’re looking at superstar players which big sides lost out on. Whether they were deemed flops, cut from the academy, or sold on to rivals, these stars have overcome teenage disappointment to turn into some of the best in the game.
From the Premier League, we have Man United’s Bruno Fernandes, sold by Boavista as a teenager, and Brighton’s Ben White, who came through the ranks at Southampton. In Milan, Theo Hernandez is showing up both Real and Atletico Madrid, while Ronaldo’s time at Barcelona rates among the biggest mistakes in Blaugrana history. We also have Man City’s Ilkay Gundogan, ditched by Schalke; Klass-Jan Huntelaar, who flopped at PSV; Nice youngster Amine Gouiri, sold by Lyon in 2020; and Moise Kean, apparently not good enough to back uop Dominic Calvert-Lewin at Everton but now a Champions League contender next to Mbappe at PSG.
Let us know which entries surprised you in the comments.
