Tim Melia stopped all three penalty kick attempts he faced as Sporting Kansas City defeated the San Jose Earthquakes in the opening round of the MLS Cup Playoffs. Gianluca Busio scored a goal in the first minute of stoppage time to put Sporting ahead 3-2 in what was scheduled to be an extra four minutes. But Chris Wondolowski, MLS's all-time leading scorer, delivered on a header to tie the game in the seventh minute of stoppage time to send the game to extra time. In the end, it was Melia's heroics that helped SKC reach the Western Conference semifinals after a 3-0 penalty shootout win vs. San Jose.
