Despite the vote being pushed back from its original 24th January date, FC Barcelona will elect its next president this season. It comes at a critical time for the five-time European champions, as they look to move on from one of the most disappointing seasons in their modern history and come to terms with the potential loss of their greatest ever player, Lionel Messi.
Whoever wins the election will have a mandate to stay in office for the next six years, and will have the toughest job any president has faced in nearly two decades – deciding the future of Messi, steering the club away from financial oblivion and building the next great Barcelona team. But who is the best person for the job? Let’s find out.
Newcomer Victor Font is looking to modernise how Barça does its business and engages with its global fanbase, and wants to focus on merchandising, online content and esports. He also has a detailed plan to bring Xavi back to the club, which the midfielder is known to be on board with.
Joan Laporta carries the appeal of having been Barça president between 2003 and 2010, an era of unprecedented success for the club. He has a good relationship with Messi, has a good track record with signings (i.e. Ronaldinho) and made the excellent decision to hire Pep Guardiola as manager when the club hit a crossroads in 2008. He is also on good terms with super-agent Mino Raiola, having worked with him on the deal which took Zlatan Ibrahimovic to the Camp Nou – could this help bring a player like Erling Braut Haaland to Catalunya in the future?
