Despite our best efforts, we finished the Barclays FA Women’s League season in second place on Sunday, as we defeated West Ham 2-0 on the final weekend.

We came into this game knowing that we’d have to better Chelsea’s result against Manchester United in order to lift the trophy - but unfortunately Emma Hayes’ side ran out 4-2 winners at Kingsmeadow, leaving us just one point behind the league leaders.

Knowing what was at stake, the game got off to a cagey start as we looked to settled our early nerves and create some early chances.

Beth Mead looked lively from the off and saw her powerful effort pushed away by Mackenzie Arnold, before guiding her instinctive header just wide of the far post.

The best chance of the first-half fell to Vivianne Miedema, though, who saw her goalbound effort blocked from six yards after being picked out inside the area by Noelle Maritz.

Elsewhere in the Women’s Super League, Manchester United found themselves leading Chelsea 2-1 at the break, only to concede twice in less than five minutes after the restart, placing the hosts back in pole position.

Needing a goal to stand a chance of winning the title, Jonas Eidevall turned to Stina Blackstenius off the bench and the Sweden international scored with her first touch, latching onto Miedema’s pass to find the bottom right corner.

Steph Catley then went on to double our advantage with a stunning finish at the near post, but by this stage, Chelsea were leading by two goals at Kingsmeadow, pushing our hopes of securing the title back to the 2022/33 season.
